I am a Japanese born artist based in Marrickville, Sydney. My projects often focus on story telling and community collaboration with themes involving the Japanese experience in Australia. I am a photographer by trade, but I also work in video, write plays, blogs and poetry, create audio-visual installations, and make performances. My recent works include: ‘You’ve Mistaken Me for a Butterfly,’ a performance about an early Japanese prostitute in the WA Goldfields; ‘Through a Distant Len’s, a play about the search for missing photographs by a prewar Japanese Australian photographer; and’ ‘In Repose’, site-specific performances and installations at Japanese Cemeteries in Townsville, Broome and Thursday Island. My recent projects with collaborator Chie Muraoka included the Cowra Japanese Cemetery Online Database, Cowra Voices heritage smartphone app and Nikkei Australia Online.

Curator & Art Producer – Sandy Edwards

I was a freelance Photographer specialising in portraiture and the arts from 1977. My passion for photography led me to become a Photography Curator and Creative producer in 1991 when I joined Stills Gallery, Australia’s most successful photographic gallery. In 2008 I founded Arthere, a new gallery model that provides services for photographers to succeed in the art world. Stills Gallery closed in 2017, Arthere is still operating. I have operated inside and outside the conventional gallery model, acknowledging how relevant and adaptable photography is in our lives. It can be vernacular (family photographs), high art or passionate story telling.

Osaka Bureau Chief – Colin Smith

I’m an artist, and writer and translator of art texts, originally from New Jersey, USA and living in Osaka since 1998. Being fascinated with old, historic and mysterious things, I’m honored to be involved in this project. Many of these photos were taken in the Kansai region of Japan where I live, and I hope to connect with these people and their families. I have a personal interest in found photography, and in my own work I use found or readymade objects and images (some of these can be seen at qolinsmith.com.) How will the story of these photographs progress? I’m excited to see.
