Translation of a comment received from Sadami on email:

When wearing a kimono, after purring on the obijime (a string used to hold a kimono sash in place) at the front of the obi (sash), the the tassel should be tucked into each side of the obi.
There are two ways of tucking the tassel in: one is to lift the tassel from the top, and the other is to tuck the tassel downward.

There are various ways of tucking in the obijime depending on the school, but for mourning, the tassel should always be facing downward. This is thought to be a way of channeling grief, as well as not folding up the bottom of the incense bag.
