Artist Statement:
Looking through the found photo collection in Untitled Showa, I was drawn in by the layered connections to my own life.
As a documentary photographer, I understand the importance of the stories that these photos may hold within, and the potential they have for bringing together communities, by marking these moments in time.
As a Geelong/Djilong resident, this project has helped awaken me to the local Japanese history of this region. My partner is Japanese, and our daughter is half- Japanese; so we are uncovering these stories together.
I was particularly intrigued by the collection’s completely anonymous images – both in their origin and in their visible content. Perhaps they are the least likely to be reunited with their original family, so we welcomed them into ours.
Like many people, we have not been able to be with our family in Japan for some time, due to Covid. We have missed many moments. So this was an opportunity to bridge that distance and create some connections.

Untitled Showaのファウンド・フォト・コレクションを見て、自分の人生と何重にも関連していると感じ、引き込まれました。
ドキュメンタリー写真家として、私はこれらの写真に秘められたストーリーの重要性を理解していると思います。また、これらの写真は、時の流れの中でその瞬間の記録として、コミュニティを結びつける可能性を秘めています。
また、ジーロング （Geelong/Djilong ）の住民として、このプロジェクトは、この地域と日本との歴史を認識させてくれました。私のパートナーは日本人ですし、娘はハーフなので、私たちは一緒にこれらの物語を発見しています。
私自身が特に引かれたのは、出所も内容も全くの匿名と思われる写真です。これらは元の家族と再会する可能性が最も低いと思われるため、私たちの家族に迎え入れることにしました。
多くの人がそうであるように、私たちもコロナの影響でしばらくは日本の家族と一緒に過ごすことができません。その大切な時間を失ってしまっています。だからこそ、この機会にその距離を埋め、つながりを持つことが出来たように思えます。

I am a documentary photographer and educator based on Wadawurrong country in Geelong/Djilong, Victoria, Australia. I am interested in encapsulating and sharing the extraordinary stories of everyday people, places, and projects; stories that recognise and appreciate the strange and awesome circumstances of being human. My aim is to create and share authentic, diverse and inclusive stories; that amplify marginalised voices and connect us as stronger communities. I also teach photography and visual storytelling.
