We received the following message via direct email from Tonbochan:
There was a movie called “Daibutsu Kaigan” (Great Buddha Enlightened)made by Daiei Kyoto Studios in 1952, starring Kazuo Hasegawa and Machiko Kyo. I am not sure, but this photo of the Big Buddha in the photo may have been a set (for that movie).

The image of the statue from “Daibutsu Kaigen” (1952) is found on the cover page of the screenplay (from Amazon second hand book). The eyes may look a bit different, and yet its atmosphere seems to be similar to the one in the photo.

We received many comments through Twitter. They said:
It may be the work of Mr. Nissho Fukuzaki (1905 – 1966).
From the atmosphere of the photo, it may have been taken before the war.
His face is similar to that of the Hiyodorigoe Great Buddha of Hyogo Prefecture, (although his hands are different).

We received a message on Facebook from Wakunakuni, who said:
What about the possibility of a movie set? The picture itself is powerful and dramatic, like a scene from a movie. And while the lotus leaves look old, the Buddha himself looks new and, with all due respect, undignified😅.
My husband, who works as a TV art director, says it looks like a movie sculpture, or a background picture, such as a projected image 💦because there are not many shadows in the way the lighting hits the Great Buddha. Moreover, the eyebrows of the Great Buddha are very different from the eyebrows of the Great Buddha in Japan. They are longer and hang closer to the cheeks. My husband doesn’t seem to believe that this Big Buddha is real. He says the girl, the place where she is standing and the way the shadows are cast in the background are different. Maybe it is a lighting difference? The face also doesn’t look like the Great Buddha of Japan. Could it be the pre-war special effects movie “大仏廻国”? (The Great Buddha Pilgrimage)

I viewed a lot of Buddha images on google, there was nothing quite like this one. It is in good shape suggesting it is not old, but made in the 20th century. It looks like it is more likely cast from a material unknown. Concrete? Often the ones you see outdoors are bronze or granite, it doesn’t look like it is made from these materials. Is it made for use other than in a temple? I don’t think it is a photo taken in Korea or HK, travel abroad in the 1940s, 50s and for most of the 60s was out of reach of most people. It is most likely a photo taken in Japan, perhaps this statue of Buddha is no longer. A large number of Buddhist temple around the Kansai are old as this is where Buddhism took root in Japan, suggesting this statue may not be affiliated with any of them.

  6. There were 2 similar messages via FB Messenger and a Twitter message, both of which recommended to view wikipedia page https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%A7%E4%BB%8F as well as another more extensive list http://www.daibutu.jp/list.htm

One message added: I saw a few similar looking statues but none that seemed to line up exactly with what’s in that photo. Maybe that implies that the statue is obscure/doesn’t exist anymore/is located overseas? (Or of course I might have just accidentally missed it when going through those lists…)…. Also the other detail I kept an eye out for was the position of the eyebrow (seems to extend down the side of the face in that photo unlike similar statues I came across)

    https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%A7%E4%BB%8Fhttp://www.daibutu.jp/list.htm

  7. We received a message via Facebook Messenger, which said: We looked at the mystery
Buddha statue) and immediately thought it wasn’t Japan – Burma perhaps ? The child is Japanese though.

We recieved a message on Facebook, which said:
Judging from the expression on his face, I’m pretty sure it’s not a Great Buddha from Japan. Korean Peninsula? The girl looks Japanese, but it was taken before World War II, so it’s not surprising that it’s from the continent. It looks like the “Tian Tan Giant Buddha” in Hong Kong. It also has a stand.

It looks similar, but the sleeve pattern is different. It may be a movie set that imitates the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple.

    • We are still trying to figure out where this photo was taken. It looks very much like the Great Buddha in Nara, but the Buddha’s sleeves are different. Chie mentioned that there is another Buddha in Nara, but I have not been able to confirm this yet.
